Modularity in buildings and infrastructure is all about being prepared to handle new technology as well as changes in its respective markets. Being able to adapt to situations is key for gaining more value out of projects. It also reduces the construction time, meaning that by the time you gather funds and finish construction, it isn’t outdated. One major example where being unprepared has, or is in this case, caused problems for the people, is the unemployment and government website coding issue. Basically government websites were created a long time ago with a coding language known as COBOL (Common Business Oriented Language). It is unable to handle the massive increase of people who are filing for unemployment. By not updating these services to a newer technology, it has created a massive inconvenience for many Americans who have been laid off. If they had updated this technology, or at least had planned for an increase in use, they would have been able to avoid this situation.
